Nadi Suddhi Pranayam is known as a Yogic Alternating Breathing Exercise. Pranayama means breathing exercises.
Prana is the Universe’s energy. Yama is a practice of letting this energy in expanding and allowing the flow of the Universe’s Energy. It comes with the air, Chi or Ki-Energy of the Universe coming into you.
In this section, I will be using this breathing exercise particularly to let go of your feeling of hatred , strong vicious resentment and anger. All of these types of negative emotions. This section is a part of series of my Blog Articles on “How to Transform Negative Emotions.”
In Nadi Suddhi, Alternating Breathing the right hand is used.
Right hand position:
Fold down the index and middle finger. You will use the thumb and the ring finger.
{1}Press and close the right nostril with the thumb. Breathe in through the left nostril in 4 counts.
{2} Focus on the lower abdominal area below the navel, and hold breath for 4 counts.
{3} Release the thumb and press and close the left nostril with the ring finger. Breathe out through the right nostril in 8 counts.
Alternating pattern
{4} Keeping the same hand positions, breath in through the right nostril. Breathe in 4 counts.
{5} Focus on the lower abdominal area below the navel, and hold breath for 4 counts.
{6} Release the Ring finger and press and close the right nostril with the thumb , exhale through the left nostril for 8 counts.
Repeat {1} to {6}
The ideal breathing counts are:
Inhale for 4 counts
Hold for 4 counts
Exhale for 8 counts
For beginners breathing counts can be modified to:
Inhale for 4 counts
Hold for 4 counts
Exhale for 4 counts
As you get more comfortable and familiar, you will be able to incorporate the energy flow and releasing of the negative emotions and feelings. Intentionally letting go of all the stuff trapped in your mind.
You don’t think about all the things that happened to you. Cognitively and mentally. Just release in the form of the energy. That is one of the major differences between Western psychology and Yogic exercises. In this Yogic way, you don’t get trapped in your thinking too much.
Inhale… greatness, powerfulness …
Hold… let the energy reach throughout the body… feel the vibrations
Exhale… all the sensations of pain and negativity…
