Learn to Meditate: Zen Yoga Candle Light Meditation Part 4
Meaning and Purpose of Candle Light Meditation:
Fire symbolizes the human being’s life-force and his ability to produce energy in the form of heat and light. It is a metaphor for passion. Fire is a pathway to tapping into one’s deepest desire.
Candle light meditation is a well known form of meditation in many spiritual practices throughout the world.
- The purpose of this practice is to become aware of how we use the eyes.
- To learn to see softly rather than to stare at an object.
- To learn to relax your gaze as you see an object with mindfulness.
You can just imagine a camp fire or a flame to meditate upon.
Using candle light is much more practical.
Be sure to have a ‘natural’ non-toxic candle made form bees wax or soy wax.
Non-scented will be the best as chemicals are usually used.
Avoid paraffin based candles.
Beginning practitioner may set up a candle in a safe location on the flour
or at an eye lever approximately 2-3 feet from where you sit.
You may choose to sit on a low chair as described in the blog, Learn to Meditate: Zen Yoga Breathing and Sitting Position Part 1 or in whatever way you are used to meditating.
Candle Light meditation is often called candle light gazing meditation.
Soft gazing and not staring at the candle is very important.
At first you may only want to meditate for 5 minutes.
Gradually you can increase up to one hour. And this is for an advanced meditation practitioner.
Breathe in the way described in Hara breathing continue to keep your awareness of the flame of the candle.
There are many visualization exercises we can do to tap into your heart’s desire.
Cupping of Your Eyes:
When you are done, end by cupping your eyes with the palms of your hand.
- Rub your hands together and feel the warmth in the the palms of your hands.
- Gently cup your eyes.
- Let your eye balls sink deep into the eyeball sockets.
