Learn to Meditate in Your Car: Zen Yoga Breathing Part 3
Car is an American Life:
Living in American suburbs or rural areas, people in this country drive so much more than those living in other nations.
A good and enjoyable use of your automobile time makes your life more efficient and productive.
The audio technology has advanced so much that you can enjoy music of your choice,
attend the Automobile University of your favorite teachers.
If you want to just relax your mind, you can quietly gaze at the sceneries and any panoramic views without thinking of your life problems or challenges. (This is really wonderful and relaxing but don’t turn this into a mediation session.) Keep your mind focused sharp on driving.
2 Don’t Do’s:
Let me emphasize again. Do not attempt to meditate while you are driving a car.
Do not do an extensive meditation session of over an hour or two immediately before you drive a long distance.
Two Cases for Meditating in Your Car:
Now I’d like to talk about when it is a good idea to meditate in your automobile. Your car should be parked in a quiet and safe location.
Case 1:
Before you have a business meeting; giving a presentation; conducting coaching or teaching engagements. You get to your destination early and park your car, sit in your car. You can meditate as much as you like or as short as 5 minutes.
Case 2:
Just get away from the craziness going on at work or at home. Get out. Don’t drive away mad or drive around and around to end up in a local bar. Instead, find a nice park in your locality, and sit quietly in your car. Duration as long as you enjoy. As short as 5 minutes.
Zen Yoga Breathing Meditation and Breathing:
“Why is it so important to focus on breathing?” I’ve been asked many times.
You can go without eating for weeks. Maybe an average person for a day…
You can go without drinking water for about 4-5 days. (Don’t try this unless you have bee trained specially.)
But for an average person you, cannot go more than 5 minutes without air.
Air is the Ki-energy (chi or Prana) of the Universe and it provides vital life force. Of course, you can provide the scientific evidence of the importance of oxygen to your brain cells and other organ cells. But this energy idea is real and much more than just oxygen.
Many people are totally unaware of breathing. When you focus on breathing and bring your awareness into your body, you gain more awareness of your body, mind, and spirit. You become more aware of the interrelations of the body, mind, spirit and energy.
Caution! Don’t breathe in strongly as to pump up the chest or breathe in forcefully through the nostrils. Quiet breathing is recommended.
Count in-breath and out-breath as one. The second in and out breath as “two.” Count up to 10 to 20. If your mind wonders and you lose your count, start from counting one again.
Posture:
Revisit Yukiko’s earlier blog, Learn to Meditate: Zen Yoga Breathing and Sitting Position.
- Sit up straight.
- Spine feeling lengthened as if suspended from the ceiling of the car.
- Lower the car seat and let the thighs angle into your hip sockets.
- Follow the instructions given in my earlier blog: Learn to Meditate: Zen Yoga Breathing and sitting Position.
Being Peaceful and Refreshed:
When you are finished, really enjoy a sense of completion and transformation.
You will attend your meeting or professional engagement calm and refreshed.
You will go back to work or home and won’t be sucked into insane situations.
