Do adults only honor and respect children only when they are gifted, talented or great achievers?  Today especially in developed nations like in America and other Western nations, people really don’t stop to celebrate children  simple because they are children or for children’s being.  

 

Celebration of children as a family unit is very important:

Women are working outside of their home.  Whether they want to work;  like to work; or they have to express themselves through profession.   Their careers are important.  It’s becoming clear that more and more people are opting in to work from home.  There are 7 reasons why you should work from home.

May 5 is Kids Celebration Day in Japan.    Koi-nobori is carp shaped wind socks or streamers traditionally flown in the open air from people’s yards at home in the open air.  Throughout mid April to May, many Japanese households set up these streamers to celebrate children.  This is a National Holiday in Japan.  

Celebration of children is very important and often overlooked in this modern society in developed Western nations.   I will talk about why celebration of children are so important and this perspective is one of the major basis that substantiates why you should begin to work from home.
I am advocating stay at home parents, stay at home moms and stay at home dads. 

 

What is Children’s Day in Japan?

In America there is no national holiday to celebrate children.  “Koi-Nobori” means ‘Carp going up.’  This idea came from Chinese Mythology.  Carps are considered to be strong and energetic creatures.   A carp can swim up a water fall.  When a carp reaches the top and crossed over the Gate of Dragon, it transforms into a dragon, a magical, mythological figure.  Mythology and rituals help to cut through people’s skepticism or conditioned mind to close off anything they are not familiar or ignorant about.

In the era of tribal warriors, in the land of a warring nation, each clan had its own banners signifying strength and courage.  Carp streamers were very popular.   Yoroi, Warrior’s armor and small statue of a warrior were adapted and Japanese began to celebrate boys for their strength and courage. 

After World War II, the Japanese government changed this day to Children’s Day and made it a National Holiday for all the children including girls.  Oak leaf wrapped pastries of  mochi (pounded rice) filled with  sweet beans are served.   And bamboo shoot wrapped mochi pastries.  

 Why is it so important to celebrate?  This becomes more apparent as we discuss  7 reasons why you should work from home.

7 Reasons Why You Should Work from Home:

These steps don’t necessarily occur in a linear order from [1] to [7].  For each stage, you will notice that you become more grateful and begin to count your blessings more.  You will quarrel far less and blame others less and less.   You will let go of being righteous and begin to be kind and gentle with your family members. 

[1] Stop Wasting Your Time: 

When you commute to work or go to your job, you waste so much time.  The first reason why you should work from home is to cut down extraneous and unnecessary wasted time.
Commuting can be riding on jam packed public transportation; being stuck in traffic; driving at least a total of 30 minutes upto 2 hours a day.

You have to rush through the morning preparation getting dressed or putting make up on, getting your children off to school…

You always need an extra child care arrangement when your child is sick or there are school holidays and vacation.

 [2] Stop Limiting Quality Time Spent Together:

Family time together is compromised.
Rushed mornings  with instant breakfast
Too many takeout food, fast food dinner, frozen or canned food.
Missing events. 
Stress and misunderstanding.

When you leave your children for many hours of day care and after school environment,  or baby sitters and nannies, do you begin to wonder?   Or your older elementary or middle school latch key children?

Exercise:  Write down what you are thinking and feeling.

 

Lots of stress, conflicts even guild, shame or total denials or rationalizations  of these feelings.

 

[3] Create more time to be with your family members:

Be fully engaged in each others’ lives.  Share a wider range of educational, cultural and recreational activities together.  Be more relaxed and build better rapport and deeper bonds.

Respect and celebrate everyone in your family.
Eliminate sibling competitions.
Share meals together.
Have an open family discussion.
When you never have time together and always rushing off, it’s really difficult to have meaningful relationships even inside of the family.
Together begin to explore your cultural heritage.

I have not even addressed single parent households.  Problems and stress are far more intensified. 

 

[4] Revise roles for a husband and wife team and or father and mother:

Fathers are claiming time and involvement with their kids.    When either the father or mother need to rush off to work, they can take turns to give breakfast to their children, make lunch and take them to school.
Who is picking the kids in the afternoon? 

Man and woman are becoming equal partners.   Financial responsibilities to support the family do not just land on the man alone.    The husband does not have the final authority and control over the wife or family.    Man and woman can mutually agree and assign their duties and tasks.

[5]  Eliminate hierarchies:

 

In the era of Internet revolution, if parents are choosing to digitize their businesses, they are less subjected to the traditional gender roles.  Since men and women work for themselves, there are no more bosses to report to.    The hierarchy of an old business models does disappear.  Everyone is an independent contractor.    No managers.  

Leaders are those who have more experiences and who have achieved greater results and build a larger team.

Women who fought for more opportunities in their profession are beginning to realize that
there is no glory working for Corporate America.  They indeed prefer time and money freedom.

 [6]   Appreciate and honor yourself, and unique talents:

When you begin to love yourself, you can love your spouse and children much more.
You are more relaxed and you can celebrate who you are and who your loved ones are.
You can celebrate being a family. 

As you work through each stage, you become more relaxed and joyous.

[7]  Clarify your definite purpose for yourself.  For your family:

Now that you are celebrating and attracting the great energy of the Universe, you are tuning into abundance.  You are seizing opportunities as they come to you.   As you accumulate wealth, you will be able to be more generous and be able to help others less fortunate than you are.

You may not at first have your goals realized.  But believing and stepping into the celebration of life, filled with gratitude, appreciation, love and harmony, you will be stepping into an abundant life.
