The Movie “Being There” Gave a Big Lesson Idea:

I would like to point out the importance of using gardening as a metaphor in life and business
issues.  Many of my viewers may not know this movie released in 1979.  Probably it was  before you were born?

Peter Sellers’ last movie, “Being There.”  Peter Sellers was British and was one of the best comedians and actors.  He won Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.   He played Chauncey Gardiner, middle aged man who tended a wealthy man’s garden and grew up watching T.V. all his life.  He knew nothing else.  He lived in this house all his life in Washington D.C.  When the old man died, he got evicted from his home and due to some accident end up in the home of a wealthy couple who advised the President of the United States.

When Chauncey answered questions directed to him by his host or the President, anything Chauncey said was always about plants, gardening and seasons.  All the top dignitaries on the Capitol Hill and the news media interpreted Chauncey’s words as profound allegorical statements, giving answers to difficult issues involving the state of economy and business.

5 Ways to Be More Productive in Business:

 [1] Resting the Field:

Ovid
Ovid

Gardening or farming has always been throughout centuries a great metaphor for life.   For us to learn from Nature, wisdom and truth.  Plants growing, in the set ups of changing seasons and men’s endeavors set up a perfect microcosm in life and business affairs.   Here is a famous quote by a poet from Before Christ Era;

The field that has rested gives a beautiful crop.
Ovid (43 BC-17 AD, Rome)

This is true.  If farmers kept the land in production all year around and year after year,  the crop yield would be decreased steadily.  There would be more chances of disease spreading and the soil’s nutrients would be reduced.  This is no a great farming practice.  And the field must rest.

Do you rest your field?
Do you rest? Do you rest from your activities adequately?  Or are you always trying to push trough and constantly busy at your computer starting the first thing in the morning when you wake up.  Especially if you are working from home on your computer.  Before you know it it’s midnight, and you don’t know where time went all day long.

And you haven’t done anything else.  You’ve been completely immersed and obsessed with what you are doing on your computer.

Learn from the ancient quote, wisdom.  Rest your field.

[2] Plant a Cover Crop:

More and more farmers are discovering and experimenting with using a cover crop.
There is no reason to leave the field fallow and in fact this is not a very good use of the land.

Down time, nature yourself, imagination, read a good book, take a walk, go hiking, eat good food.
cover crop is a crop planted primarily to manage soil erosion instead of keeping the field fallow.  Erosion is a major issue.  The wind and lots rain wash away the top soil every year.  Planting a cover crop  benefits also soil fertility, soil quality.  Preventing water infiltration, weeds, pests,  pathogen infestation and diseases.  A cover crop also stimulates biodiversity and wildlife.

Some of the popular cover crops are clover, rye, peas, oats sorghum-sundangrass and buckwheat.

Do you plant a cover crop in your field?

In your down time, when you do have time, how do you spend your time?  Do you just watch T.V.?  Baseball and football games?  Go to see entertaining movies?  Parties?

Veggie out?  Do you do things that are totally unrelated to nurturing or growing yourself?
Nurturing your soul, your heart or your mind?  Do you read some wonderful books in your downtime?  Do you listen to audio tapes… I mean mp3’s?  In your down time, do you look for inspiration and encouragement to move forward?   Do you grow as a person in your downtime?   Plant a cover crop for your down time.

[3] Crop Rotation:

European farmers started to apply a method of crop rotation since the Middle Age.   This is very important to apply to a large scale farming.  So very important today.  You don’t do farming but in today’s complex Era of Internet, the basic principle form this should be implemented in your business and personal life.
Crop rotation is a systematic approach by planning what section of your garden or field should have specific crop from one year to next.  This is particularly important to large scale farmers or entrepreneurs who are multiple businesses or large organization of down-lines.

European farmers used crop rotation and planted, wheat, turnips, barley and clover.
In the South in America cotton farmers needed a solution after cotton began depleting the soil, they planted peanuts and peas.

As the world is shrinking, and people are meeting all different nationalities and cultural diversities, it is important to learn to respect differences.  Also to implement many varieties and approaches.  Learn to be tolerant.  Be open-minded.  Not be prejudiced.   Change with time.

Being stuck in the same old system and way is a dangerous place to be.

This is repeated like a Mantra over and over again.  It’s the most important.  The reason only 5 % of people ever succeed in their business is because people forget their definite purpose and never tap into their deepest Why.  when they are challenged, they quit.

All farmers know what their main crop is and where they are going to market.
Often people forget the main thing in their business or life; they get too busy in approaches and systems.  Always know what you are primarily growing and why.

The Law of Gender or Germination rules gardening and so does it govern your business.
No success comes instantaneously.  There is a blueprint of success carefully mapped out.

5.  If you are a gardener and not a big farmer, you can even do companion planting:

3 Sisters

The American Indians used companion planting when they grew food.   It’s very well known as the Three Sisters and they inter-planted corn, beans and squash.  Corn served as poles for beans.  Inter-planting with squash kept down week takeovers.

One plant is supported by another plant.  Not only physically, but providing nourishment and bringing beneficial insects, or repelling insects or animals that may have damaging effects.
