Sustainable Economy, A New Vision for Internet Business

Sustainable Economy, A New Vision for Internet Business

Sustainability Is a Buzz Word:

EPA defines Sustainability:

“Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations.

Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment.”

  • Sustainability of our economic and political structures.
  • Sustainability of our Environment, the Earth.
  • Sustainability of our lifestyle

I’d like to talk about

  • “Small Is Beautiful: Economics As If People Mattered” by E.F. Schumacher,
and two books by John Robbins
  • “New Good Life: Living Better Than Ever in an Age of Less”
  • “Diet for a New America 25th Anniversary Edition: How Your Food Choices Affect Your Health and the Future of Life on Earth”

In the last several decades, many people are getting more and more concerned about the Earth’s sustainable environment.

It has been almost  forty years since these landmark book was published.  Where is the economy heading today?  Some people believe that “Small Is Beautiful” economic idea has sadly been forgotten, as discussed in Madeleine Bunting’s Blog.

In this current trend, the New Era of the Internet Revolution, will newly emerging Industry leaders be able to adapt some of these visionary ideas?

E. F. Schumacher in “Small Is Beautiful,” challenged the 20th century’s economic expansion as “gigantism.”   Mass production was in vogue and people were intoxicated with this new availability of cheap prices and cheap goods.
Mass Media!
Mass Culture!
Schumacher warned that such a big scale was devaluing people’s self-esteem and self-worth.

  • They were just sitting on the sideline of mass production.
  • Carried to their offices, packed on trains or buses.
  • Sitting in a traffic jam.
  • But the serious side effects of this approach was killing people’s craftsmanship, creativity and unique expressions.
  • In the name of globalization, slowly local businesses were losing out in the market place.

A study published in 2013 reveals that in the U.S. 75.4% of all wealth is owned by the richest 10% of the people.

For the past several decades, mega industries have gained an enormous control over policy making and politicians by lobbying.

Schumacher’s prediction came true.

  • Who is satisfied today with their 9-5 job?
  • Sitting in a cubical?
  • Being told what to do by their bosses?
  • Following company protocols?
As new young leaders are emerging in the Internet Revolution, is it possible to depend on them to be truly visionary and to rethink?
What type of new economy?
Can they help to create happiness and satisfaction for all the people?

2. “The New Good Life: Living Better Than Ever In An Age Of Less” by John Robbins
  • What is success in your life?
  • What actually should it feel like to you?
  • Having money to buy things, travel to places you want is really great.
  • Can it be measured by a kind of house you live in? A car you drive?
  • Clothes you wear?

John Robbins2John Robbins was an heir to Baskin-Robbins.
Instead of becoming a successor to this famous ice cream company, he went to seek a simple life that he truly believed in his heart.
His best selling book, New Diet for America” exposed many atrocious, inhuman violations against animals in the name of mass, profitable food production.

  • This is a great guide for reexamining a simple life that promotes environmentally sound and healthy life.

These books should be on your ‘Must Read’ List.   Learn More About “The New Good Life” and the New Diet for America.”
