Leaning Styles to Succeed in Business and Life
Different Types of learning Styles – Historical Understanding:
Today especially in early education, curriculum makers, researchers and teachers are emphasizing on young children’s learning styles. Researchers now understands that people especially young children learn more effectively tapping into schema, their prior knowledge and life experience.
When you understand your dominant style of learning, then you can incorporate other learning styles to propel yourself to a next level. By mastering these learning styles one by one you will be able to succeed in business and in life. Learning to use a wide range of leaning styles is the key to your success in your business and in your life.
Throughout the history of mankind how did learning take place?
In Religion, people used religious scriptures. People read, wrote out, recited and discussed to understand the teaching. Then, they tried to apply these teaching examples to their life.
7 Styles of Learning:
It’s been known for centuries that learning engages various senses. The eye, ear, word, hand and eye coordination, etc. The experts in the field of cognitive learning characterize into 3 learning styles; visual, auditory and kinesthetic. In any give situation, these cognitive styles overlap. In this blog article, my emphasis is on learning situations to describe 7 types of learning styles.
[1] Learning from Written Text:
{A} Silent reading- visual
In Asian countries, where Buddhism was the way of life, learning from written scripture was essential. And still goes on today. The Heart Sutra is one of the most popular Buddhist Scriptures. It originated in Sanskrit, and then translated into Chinese and Japanese and into other languages. {A} Silent reading- visual
A sutra is a textbook, a compilation of literature or a collection of aphorisms. Asian Buddhist students would study in four different ways. First they read silently. mokudoku-(黙読)
{B} Reciting
– spoken words while reading
– spoken words from memory
The students read out loud and recite in a certain style. dokyou(読経)
{C} Transcribing manually or nowadays typing in to a text
Then they transcribe by writing the words and phrases using a calligraphy brush and ink. Shakyou (写経)Nowadays a ball point pen would do.
Various parts of the brain is used when you engage different types of learning. For each specific
style, information is taken in and assimilated in a unique way.
Using Senses and body Movement.
[2] Images, Pictures or Symbols:
When images and pictures are used in addition to a written text or a lecture, it becomes much easier to understand the information being presented. Data can be presented in a bar chart, pie chart, line graph, flow diagram. Many advanced learners are using mind mapping when they take notes or brainstorm their projects.
Symbols give powerful associations to religious and spiritual teachings; natural phenomena, cultural significance; or mathematical models.
[3] Sound:
Listening to a lecture from an instructor or listen to a recording. Learning through songs and music is also very powerful. I enjoyed watching elementary school kids learning about American history by singing songs and performing musicals. Many adults learn deep meaning of feeling, places and life from songs, musicals and symphony orchestras.
Repetition is the key to learning and students have used cassette tapes, CD’s, iPod and smart phones.
Some people call it the Automobile University and play their favorite, motivational lessons while driving.
Some believe in the power of the subconscious mind so much so that they keep their devices running all night with talks and lectures.
[4] Logical and Cerebral Learning:
The left side of the brain is used predominantly. This learning style is helpful in learning mathematical and scientific fields. The person who learns in this style seems to know every detail and can talk about literal aspects of things.
Often all his friends think he is all in the head. This style of learner often may be missing some links to reality or not good at adapting to changing situations.
[5] Kinesthetic and Physical Learning:
Young children lean by using objects with their hands. The use of blocks to build a three dimensional structures. The children enjoy and learn so much from gardening, not only gardening itself, but also nutrition, math and sociology and group dynamics. Use of twigs, stones and sand probably evoked more imagination than using plastic toys available today. The concept of numbers, shape and size can be best learned in kinesthetic approaches. Some people are much more comfortable expressing their ideas through body movement, facial expression and hand gestures.
Often it is recommended, when journaling, to write out by hand rather than using the keyboard to explore your deepest emotions. Or to make drawings to discover your purpose or visions in life.
In celebrations, and ceremonies, tribes gathered and dance their ritualistic dances by a fire side.
People have come to very profound realizations while walking in nature.
Filed work is encouraged in many fields of studies rather than just from books, films or classroom lectures.
[6] Visualization Learning:
Thoughts and ideas visualized in the mind will affect the outcome in the real world. The mind can hold images in a number of ways.
{A} Remembering Intentionally:
places, things and people you remember that easily come to your mind.
{B} Free Association:
Some association with the things important to you. They become picture or images in your mind.
{C} Random Memories:
Some daily or mundane thoughts come to you as images without consciously directing to the mind
{D} Religious or Spiritual Invocations:
Your faith and belief connect to you to spiritual experiences. You see symbolic images in your mind.
As you are more practiced in spirituality, you will have a greater guidance from your god, Universal Intelligence or intuition.
{E} Autosuggestion:
By repeating affirmations or saying your purpose and goals, you are commanding the subconscious mind to learn what they are. You impress on the subconscious mind your Why’s, deepest desires. This leaning style has become the foundation of personal development to experience the power of positive thinking.
[7] Social, Group Learning:
A person does not learn on his own. A person does not go on to accomplish great things in life on his own. Successful people always network within a group of like minded people. They exchange their business ideas and experiences. When people who share their visions together, their minds are “coordinated in a spirit of harmony.” Napoleon Hill called this the spiritual units of energy. One of the most powerful forces.
All successful people belong to Mastermind groups.

Yukiko,
Great blog post.
I learn best from Visual, tactile, symbols. Also some logical and spiritual.
Although I am a good reader,
I learn least from reading the written word.
If you want to see my thoughts about “intentions and income”, check out me blog post.
